The Porsche Cayman (981) is the third-generation Cayman, a two-seat mid-engine, rear-drive coupe built on the same platform as the 981 Boxster and sold from 2013 through 2016. The base car uses a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated flat-six from Porsche's MA1 engine family, driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic.
The MA1 flat-six is direct-injected and a cleaner design than the M96/M97 units in the older 987, so the 981 does not carry the intermediate-shaft (IMS) bearing risk of those earlier cars. The 981 is also the last Cayman range with a naturally aspirated flat-six: its successor, the 718 Cayman, moved the base and S cars to turbocharged flat-fours.

No. That failure mode belongs to the older M96/M97 engines in the 987 and earlier. The 981's MA1 flat-six is a different, direct-injected design without that bearing.
It is uncommon on the 981, unlike older Porsches. When it happens it is linked to injector leaks or chronic cold, low-rpm running. A borescope inspection at pre-purchase is the standard safeguard, and a clean scope largely settles the question.
