The Porsche Boxster (981) is the third-generation Boxster, a two-seat mid-engine, rear-drive roadster built on the same platform as the 981 Cayman coupe and sold from 2013 through 2016. The base car uses a 2.7-liter naturally aspirated flat-six from Porsche's MA1 engine family, driving the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic. It was the first Boxster generation to use electromechanical power steering in place of hydraulic assist.
The MA1 flat-six is direct-injected and a cleaner design than the M96/M97 units in the older 987, so the 981 does not carry the intermediate-shaft (IMS) bearing risk of those earlier cars. The 981 is also the last Boxster range with a naturally aspirated flat-six: its successor, the 718 Boxster, moved to turbocharged flat-fours.
