The 911 GT3 (997.2) is the track-biased, rear-drive 911 built by Porsche Motorsport. Its naturally aspirated 3.8-liter Mezger flat-six is a high-revving, port-injected, dry-sump engine — NOT the DFI Carrera unit — driving the rear wheels through a six-speed manual only, on center-lock wheels.
The point of the GT3 is that engine: the Mezger never used the IMS bearing that gave the Carrera cars trouble, and it is prized for durability. The real checks are the WC51 intake-air-distributor campaign, the center-lock wheel-hub recall, and evidence of accident or track damage rather than a specific engine defect.
US NHTSA campaigns for this model. A listed campaign may not apply to a particular car, and may already have been remedied — check a specific car by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
No. The GT3, GT3 RS, GT3 RS 4.0 and GT2 RS kept the motorsport-derived Mezger flat-six — a separate, port-injected, dry-sump engine. Only the Carrera, Targa and Turbo cars use the DFI 9A1 unit.
