About the Porsche 911 GT3 RS

The 911 GT3 RS (997.1) is the homologation-special, most track-focused 997.1 — a lightened, wider GT3. It shares the GT3's naturally aspirated 3.6-liter "Mezger" flat-six and a close-ratio six-speed manual with a single-mass flywheel, and like the GT3 that engine does NOT carry the Carrera M96/M97's IMS-bearing or bore-scoring risk.

The RS is the rare hotter variant that is both lighter AND physically wider than the car it's based on: about 44 lb (20 kg) lighter than the GT3, with a rear track roughly 44 mm wider using the wide Carrera 4/Turbo shell for more mechanical grip. The weight comes out via an adjustable carbon-fiber rear wing, a plastic engine lid, a plastic rear window, carbon-fiber bucket seats and the lighter single-mass flywheel; a Club Sport package added a bolt-in roll cage, fire extinguisher and six-point harness.

Buying notes

The naturally aspirated Mezger does NOT carry the Carrera M96/M97's IMS-bearing or bore-scoring failures — it's a dry-sump race engine prized for durability, and free of the coolant-pipe issue that dogs the turbocharged Mezger cars.
These are hard-driven track cars, so the real checks are accident and track damage, tired suspension, and a complete service history rather than a specific engine defect.
NHTSA recall 07V557000 covers the 2008 GT3 and GT3 RS (only about 37 cars): the PASM and traction-control switch console was misassembled, so the switch LEDs could falsely show a PASM mode change or traction control switched off when the switches weren't pressed. The fix was a replacement console — verify it was done.
