The 911 Carrera S (997.1) is the rear-drive Carrera stepped up to the larger 3.8-liter M97 flat-six, with bigger brakes, wider rear wheels and, from the factory, PASM adaptive dampers. An optional X51 Powerkit lifted the 3.8 further. It ran the same six-speed manual or five-speed Tiptronic S as the base car behind the facelifted round-headlamp face.
Being a Carrera it still uses the M96/M97 engine family, so the bore-scoring risk and the non-serviceable single-row IMS bearing apply just as they do on the 3.6 — buy on condition and history. Only the Mezger-engined Turbo and GT3 sidestep the engine worry entirely.
