The 911 Targa (993) is the glass-roof 911 of the fourth generation, built from 1996 to 1998 on the rear-drive Carrera platform with the 282 hp (285 PS) VarioRam naturally aspirated flat-six. It introduced an all-new Targa concept: instead of the old removable roof panel, a large tinted glass panel slides back under the rear window, turning almost the whole roof into an opening greenhouse.

It is a genuine engineering first for the 911, but the sliding-glass mechanism is the car's weak point — owners report cabin heat-soak, rattles and creaks, and roof-mechanism faults. On a Targa the roof needs checking as carefully as the engine.
