The 911 Carrera Cabriolet (993) is the soft-top version of the rear-drive base Carrera, sharing the air-cooled M64 3.6-liter flat-six, the standard six-speed manual or optional four-speed Tiptronic S, and the generation's new multi-link rear axle. It is a touch heavier than the coupe and carries the same 1994–95 versus MY1996 VarioRam engine split.

Like every naturally aspirated 993, its 282 hp (285 PS) VarioRam engine (from MY1996) broadens the mid-range over the earlier 268 hp (272 PS) car. The convertible trades a little rigidity and weight for open-air motoring, but keeps the coupe's tamer, more planted chassis manners.
