The 911 Carrera 4 (993) is the all-wheel-drive base 911, built from 1995 to 1997 with the air-cooled M64 3.6-liter flat-six and a six-speed manual only. Its AWD system is far simpler and lighter than the 964's three-differential setup: a viscous coupling sends roughly 5–50% of torque to the front axle as needed.

It shares the rear-drive Carrera's 268-then-282 hp (272-then-285 PS) VarioRam engine change and the generation's new multi-link rear axle. The AWD hardware adds a little weight over the rear-drive car in exchange for all-weather traction and a more planted feel.
