The SLR McLaren Roadster (R199, 2007-2009) is the open version of the SLR coupe, keeping the carbon-fiber monocoque, the front-mid 617 hp supercharged AMG V8 and the 5-speed SpeedShift automatic. The top is a powered fabric roof that the driver unlatches by hand before it folds away, and the car keeps the coupe's rear airbrake and side-exit exhausts.
It trades a little weight and rigidity for open-air access to the supercharged V8's noise, and it drives with the same heavy GT character as the coupe. It shares the coupe's ownership considerations: specialist-only service and costly consumables.
It's a powered fabric top rather than a folding hardtop. The driver releases a manual latch, then the roof stows electrically. It keeps the weight down versus a metal folding roof but costs a step of driver involvement.
