The LP500 S (1982-1985), also sold as the LP5000 S, grew the V12 from 3.9 to 4.8 liters. Peak power stayed about the same as the LP400 S, but the bigger engine added torque low down, so it pulls harder in normal driving and is easier to get along with. It keeps the wide-body shape and P7 tires introduced on the S.
It's the transitional wide-body Countach: more usable than the earlier cars, and a stepping stone to the four-valve 5000 QV that followed. Roughly 30 to 50 went to the US.
For torque and drivability. The extra displacement gave more low- and mid-range pull without chasing a bigger peak-power number, which made the wide-body car more relaxed to drive day to day. It set up the jump to the four-valve 5.2-liter QV.
