The Ferrari 488 GTB (internal type F142M, 2015-2019) replaced the naturally aspirated 458 and put a twin-turbocharged 3.9-liter V8 (the F154 CB, 661 hp) in the mid-engine V8 berlinetta. It was Ferrari's return to forced induction on this car after decades of high-revving naturally aspirated V8s, and it drives the rear wheels through a 7-speed Getrag dual-clutch. Turbocharging brought a huge jump in torque, 561 lb-ft against the 458's 398, and Ferrari worked hard to keep throttle response sharp and the redline high at 8,000 rpm.
The 488 was also the first modern V8 berlinetta styled in-house by the Ferrari Styling Centre under Flavio Manzoni rather than by Pininfarina, with the big side scallops feeding the intercoolers. It revealed at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show and was built in Maranello. The switch from natural aspiration is the defining talking point: more thrust, but at the cost of the 458's screaming top-end and some of its purity, which is why the two cars are cross-shopped so heavily.

Emissions and efficiency pressure, plus the torque and flexibility turbocharging brings. The 488's F154 V8 makes 561 lb-ft against the naturally aspirated 458's 398, so it's far stronger in the mid-range. The trade is the 458's naturally aspirated top-end sound, which is the main reason people still cross-shop the two. Plus the prices are similar.
