The 458 Spider (2011-2015) is the open version of the 458 Italia, and the first mid-rear-engine Ferrari V8 to use a folding aluminum hardtop rather than a soft top. The roof stows in about 14 seconds and, in aluminum, is lighter than an equivalent fabric top would be, tucking away over the engine without eating the whole trunk. Mechanically it's the Italia: the same 562 hp 4.5-liter F136 V8 and 7-speed dual-clutch.
The trade-off versus the coupe is weight and a slightly lower top speed, the price of losing the fixed roof. In return you get open-air access to one of the best-sounding engines Ferrari has built. It's the volume open 458 and shares the coupe's ownership considerations.
