The seventh-generation BMW M5 (G90, 2024-present) is the first M5 built as a plug-in hybrid. It pairs the S68 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, 577 hp (585 PS) on its own, with an electric motor built into the 8-speed automatic and an 18.6 kWh floor battery, for a combined system output of 717 hp (727 PS) and 738 lb-ft. Drive goes to all four wheels through M xDrive, which keeps a rear bias and a selectable rear-wheel-drive mode.
The trade-off is weight. The hybrid hardware and the floor battery push curb weight past 5,300 lb, making this the heaviest M5 ever, and the battery cuts into trunk space versus a plain 5 Series. In return you get the extra shove of the e-motor and an EPA-estimated 25 miles of electric-only running for short commutes.

Yes. It combines the twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor in the gearbox and a floor-mounted battery, and it will run on electricity alone for an EPA-estimated 25 miles (up to 43 miles WLTP in Europe). The hybrid system is there for performance and daily electric running, not just efficiency.
The plug-in hybrid hardware. The high-voltage battery, the integrated electric motor, and the extra cooling all add mass the non-hybrid F90 didn't carry, which is the main trade-off of the new powertrain.
