The M4 Competition xDrive adds BMW's M all-wheel-drive system to the 503 hp Competition, turning it into the all-weather, launch-hard member of the lineup. The extra driven axle makes it the quickest-accelerating of the volume M4s off the line and far more usable in the wet and cold than the rear-drive cars.
The M xDrive system can send drive rearward and, in its 2WD mode, disconnect the front axle for a pure rear-drive feel when you want it. That's the pitch: traction on demand, without permanently giving up the tail-out character the M4 is known for.
