The BMW M4 (F82, 2015-2020) is the coupe half of the first turbocharged M3/M4 generation, replacing the E90-era M3 Coupe. Power comes from the S55B30T0, a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six making 425 hp (431 PS) and 406 lb-ft (550 N·m), sent to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed M-DCT dual-clutch with an active M limited-slip differential.
It uses a carbon-fiber-reinforced-plastic roof standard to trim weight and lower the center of gravity. This same S55 engine and chassis underpin every other model in this family — the Convertible, the anniversary 30 Jahre, the track-tuned CS and the water-injected GTS — each running a different state of tune.
US NHTSA campaigns for this model. A listed campaign may not apply to a particular car, and may already have been remedied — check a specific car by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
It's a real, widely reported S55 concern shared across this whole family (and the contemporary M3 and M2 Competition): a friction-fit hub can slip on the crankshaft nose and throw off engine timing, worst case damaging the engine. It shows up most on tuned or high-mileage cars — aftermarket downpipes, charge pipes and tunes add torque that stresses the hub — and reinforced aftermarket hubs exist as a fix. On a stock, well-documented car it's a reason to buy carefully, not a reason to avoid the model.
