The M3 Competition xDrive adds BMW's M xDrive all-wheel drive to the 503 hp Competition, making it the first M3 ever offered with anything but rear-wheel drive. The system is rear-biased and includes a pure rear-drive (2WD) mode, so it doesn't give up the tail-out character entirely for the added traction.
That extra driven axle makes it the quickest-launching M3 short of the CS and far more usable in the wet and cold than the rear-drive cars, at a modest weight penalty.
