The E46 M3 Coupe (2000-2006) is the third-generation M3, built on the E46 3 Series at BMW's Regensburg plant. Power comes from the S54, a naturally aspirated 3.2-liter inline-six with six individual throttle bodies, double-VANOS variable valve timing and an 8,000 rpm redline, driving the rear wheels. US cars were rated 333 hp; European cars carried a slightly higher 343 PS (about 338 hp) rating of the same engine.
Buyers chose between a 6-speed Getrag manual and the optional SMG-II automated manual, a single-clutch gearbox shifted by lever or paddles. It's widely seen as a high point for the line: a compact, rear-drive coupe with a high-revving straight-six, sitting between the E36 M3 Coupe and the V8-powered E90 that replaced it.
US NHTSA campaigns for this model. A listed campaign may not apply to a particular car, and may already have been remedied — check a specific car by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
The 6-speed manual avoids the SMG-II's hydraulic pump and accumulator, which are expensive to fix and can leave an SMG car unable to shift. Plenty of people love the SMG's paddle shifts, but the manual is the simpler ownership path and is usually the one enthusiasts steer toward.
No. Unlike the earlier E36, the E46 M3 was never built as a four-door. It came only as this coupe, the convertible, and the Europe-only CSL.
