The 911 Carrera Cabriolet (996.1) is the soft-top version of the rear-drive base Carrera, sharing the water-cooled M96 3.4-liter flat-six, the standard six-speed manual or optional five-speed Tiptronic S, and the Boxster-derived front structure and "fried-egg" headlights. It trades a little rigidity and weight for open-air motoring.
It carries exactly the same M96 engine concerns as the coupe — the sealed IMS bearing, weeping rear main seal and bore-scoring risk — with the same year nuance: 1998–1999 cars have the sturdier dual-row IMS, while Porsche moved to the weaker single-row bearing around MY2000.
US NHTSA campaigns for this model. A listed campaign may not apply to a particular car, and may already have been remedied — check a specific car by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Not a recall. Porsche never recalled the IMS bearing; it settled a US class action (Eisen v. Porsche) in 2013 that reimbursed IMS repairs, but only for 2001–2005 cars. That leaves most 996.1s — the 1998–2000 model years — outside the coverage, so budget for the fix yourself and treat a documented retrofit as a plus.
