The 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet (996.1) is the all-wheel-drive soft-top 911, built for 1998–2001. It pairs the open body with the same M96.02 water-cooled 3.4-liter flat-six and viscous-coupling AWD system as the Carrera 4 coupe, driven through a six-speed manual or five-speed Tiptronic S.
It carries the same M96 engine concerns as the rest of the range — the sealed IMS bearing, weeping rear main seal and bore-scoring risk — with the year nuance that 1998–1999 cars use the sturdier dual-row IMS versus the weaker single-row bearing Porsche adopted around MY2000. The convertible body adds weight and sheds a little rigidity over the coupe.
US NHTSA campaigns for this model. A listed campaign may not apply to a particular car, and may already have been remedied — check a specific car by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Not a recall. Porsche never recalled the IMS bearing; it settled a US class action (Eisen v. Porsche) in 2013 that reimbursed IMS repairs, but only for 2001–2005 cars. That leaves most 996.1s — the 1998–2000 model years — outside the coverage, so budget for the fix yourself and treat a documented retrofit as a plus.
