New direct-injection 9A1-derived race engine — the first GT3 without the Mezger unit.
The 911 GT3 (991.1) is the track-biased, rear-drive 911 from Porsche's GT department. It is the FIRST GT3 to drop the Mezger engine, using a new direct-injection 9A1-derived race flat-six that revs to 9,000 rpm, driving through a seven-speed PDK only — no manual was offered — with rear-axle (rear-wheel) steering.
One defect defines the early cars: after two GT3s caught fire in early 2014, Porsche halted deliveries and replaced the complete engine in all 785 built to that point (a loose connecting-rod fastener could let oil reach hot components), extending the engine warranty to 10 years / 120,000 miles for that failure mode. On any 991.1 GT3, confirm the replacement engine was fitted and documented.
