The 720S Spider is the convertible 720S, introduced in late 2018 (2019 model year). It swaps the coupé's fixed roof for a one-piece carbon-fiber retractable hardtop that folds in about 11 seconds and can be operated at up to 50 km/h (31 mph). Everything mechanical carries over: the same twin-turbo 4.0-liter M840T V8, the same 7-speed Graziano dual-clutch gearbox, and the same MonoCage II carbon tub, whose rigidity is unaffected by removing the roof.
The convertible pays only a modest price for open-air driving (roughly 108 lb / ~49 kg over the coupé for the folding-roof hardware) and matches the coupé's 2.9-second 0–100 km/h time and 212 mph top speed with the roof up (dropping to 202 mph roof-down). As with the coupé, McLaren publishes no official build total; VIN-tracking suggests on the order of ~2,500 Spiders were made before the 750S took over in 2023.
