Introduced in August 2018, the M5 Competition steps the S63 up to 617 hp and adds a firmer, lowered suspension tune, stiffer engine mounts, and cosmetic trim changes over the base car. Otherwise it's the same engine, 8-speed automatic, and M xDrive all-wheel-drive hardware.
For 2021, BMW dropped the non-Competition M5 from the US lineup entirely, making the Competition the default and eventually only F90 M5 sold new here. It's the volume choice of the range.
