The M4 CSL (2022) revives the 'Coupe Sport Leichtbau' badge for the first time since the E46 M3 CSL. It's the hardcore, rear-drive, limited-run G82: the high 543 hp (550 PS) tune, 1,000 units worldwide, and a serious diet. By DIN curb weight it's about 165 lb (75 kg) under the rear-drive M4 Competition; BMW marketed up to roughly 240 lb versus a comparably equipped car.
The weight comes out by deleting the rear seats entirely, using carbon-fiber-reinforced parts for the hood, roof, center console and trunk plus carbon bucket seats, fitting thinner glass and a lighter exhaust, and cutting sound deadening. It's the most track-focused M4 of the generation and the collector's pick, sold only as an automatic and only rear-wheel drive.
CSL is 'Coupe Sport Leichtbau,' or lightweight sport coupe, a badge BMW hadn't used since the E46 M3 CSL of 2003. On the G82 it signals the full-fat treatment: rear seats gone, carbon everywhere, thinner glass, and a hard cap of 1,000 cars, which is what makes it the collector's M4 of the generation.
