Announced in November 2016 for the 2017 model year, the Vanquish S became the only regular-production Vanquish once the base car was discontinued -- there was no lower-output Vanquish sold alongside it. The changes versus the final base cars are narrowly focused: more top-end power from the same 5.9-liter V12, carried on the same 8-speed Touchtronic III automatic, brakes, tires and body dimensions as the outgoing car. Torque is unchanged from the base car's own 2014+ figure, so the S's gain is a pure power increase rather than a wider mechanical rework.
Deliveries began in December 2016. The S ran through 2018, when the whole Vanquish line was replaced by the DBS Superleggera.
It's real but narrow. The S gains genuine extra power over the final base cars, with torque unchanged, on the same 8-speed transmission, brakes, tires and dimensions. It isn't a lightweight special or a chassis rework -- treat it as a power-focused update to the existing car rather than a distinct performance sub-model.
