The DB11 V12 launched the DB11 generation for model year 2017, Aston Martin's first car on a new, stiffer bonded-aluminum architecture and the first to run a V12 the company developed entirely in-house rather than through its earlier Ford-era relationship. It replaced the DB9 (VH2) as Aston Martin's core V12 grand tourer, moving from a naturally aspirated 5.9-liter V12 to a twin-turbo 5.2-liter unit.
Where the DB9 used a conventional rear wing, the DB11 introduced Aston's AeroBlade duct, channeling air through the C-pillars to manage rear-end lift without a visible spoiler. A lighter V8 coupe followed a model year later, and this V12 was itself uprated into the DB11 V12 AMR from 2018 on.

Before the V8 joined for model year 2018, every DB11 built was V12-powered, so a lot of early cars, listings, and period reviews simply say "DB11" rather than "DB11 V12." Confirm the engine on any 2017 car specifically, since the two engines aren't badged differently at a glance.
The AMR is the same 5.2L twin-turbo V12 tuned for more peak power, paired with a firmer rear suspension calibration and lighter forged wheels. There's no evidence of a broader curb-weight cut versus this standard V12 car — treat the AMR as a power and chassis update, not a lightweight special.
